![]() You also have access to a variety of rifles to choose from, but them all being unlocked from the beginning robs you of any sense of progression.ĭon’t get me wrong, I was grateful of the choice, and different levels favour greater magnification or a larger magazine size, but some rifles vastly outperform others. The playable characters have no discernible gameplay differences, so their addition to the remaster feels slightly gratuitous. ![]() Karl, our gravelly protagonist, is well-voiced, narrating each mission debrief and cutscene, but the game will unapologetically switch back to him during cutscenes, even if you’re playing as someone else. Though draw distance is vital to sniping, and the Switch version undoubtedly has some downgrades over other platforms, the framerate was smooth throughout my playtime. It’s a real pity that the World War 2 setting doesn’t allow for silenced snipers, because being able to stealthily pick off every enemy would truly allow Sniper Elite V2’s best feature to shine.įortunately, the performance is surprisingly steady regardless of the havoc that’s happening on-screen. Realistic guerrilla warfare, this is not. What’s worse is that enemies are alerted to your position almost instantly and will return fire after your first shot. It’s a jarring juxtaposition where one minute I’m taking pin-point accurate shots from hundreds of metres away, and the next minute I’m getting slaughtered by weapons that can hit me behind cover, leaving little chance to retaliate, if any. To top it off, checkpoints are few and far between, leading to frustrating situations where you’ll clear 10 enemies only to get shot in the side while trying to advance. You can still get the typical slow-motion camera effect if you’re accurate, but incoming fire makes precision increasingly untenable and frustrating as your reticule bounces around frantically. Suddenly, you’re forced to either take sporadic pot-shots, or switch to a terribly inaccurate machine gun. Sniper Elite V2 Remastered loses its USP as enemies charge you with reckless abandon. Once soldiers are alerted to your position, it becomes a bang-average cover shooter. ![]() It’s a shame, then, that the best part of Sniper Elite V2 Remastered is often so short lived. It’s safe to say that this title is a visual wonder, even on the small screen. The wide, panoramic view of a bullet’s flight over 200 metres is a spectacle unlike anything that's been available on Switch to date. It’s almost scary, really, witnessing a bullet’s damage in such excruciating detail, but it’s a macabre marvel at the same time. When your shot lands and the camera kicks in, you’re treated to an X-ray view of your bullet penetrating flesh and organs, as bone fragments and viscera erupt from your target. You can adjust how often it occurs in the menu of Sniper Elite V2 Remastered, and you could argue it’s the main reason to consider playing this rerelease. (Pic: REBELLION) (Image: REBELLION)īy now, the Sniper Elite series is well-known for its unique selling point: the gorgeous but grisly slow-mo kill camera.
